The Deli Fort was built in the reign of Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648. Although some of the structures were added during Shah Jahan’s son Aurengzeb’s reign. The prominent buildings in the fort are described separately such as the Lahore and Delhi Gates; the Naubat Khana; the Diwan-i-Aam; Rang Mahal, the Shah Burj; the Asad Burj etc.
Interestingly this book has two large fold-outs, one is the ground plan and the other is a sketch of the birds eye of the fort and its interiors. The author Gordon Sanderson worked with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a Superintendent, Mahomedan and British Monuments, Northern Circle.
He was best known for his work in preserving and documenting the historical monuments of India. Sanderson also wrote books on other Indian monuments. At one time in the ASI, Sanderson, decided to fight for Britain when WWI broke out. Taking charge as Lieutenant of 2nd King Edward VII’s Gurkha Rifles. Lieutenant Gordon Sanderson was killed in battle in France. He was buried in the British and Indian cemetery, at Pas de Calais, in Northern France.
