Three postcards feature Crawford Market and trams during the British era in Bombay (Mumbai). Two of the postcards from 1914 show the famous Crawford Market and electric trams; the third, probably from the 1940s, shows motor vehicles in front of the Market. The Crawford Market, or Mahatma Phule Market as it is known now, is the busiest in Bombay.

The inside features a central hall with three large gateways and a 128-foot-tall clock tower. Inside the main center is a lovely stone fountain, which was gifted by Sir Cowasji Jehangir, the city’s industrialist and prolific philanthropist. Visible on two of the cards was once the charm of Bombay’s transportation, the electric tram.

The building was designed by the British architect William Emerson, displaying an excellent example of British architecture. Click first image to enlarge.

Did you know- Bombay was electrified in 1882, and Crawford Market was the first commercial building to be lit up by electricity in the city.
