Crawford Market Bombay, 1906 Advertising Postcard
An old 1906 advertising postcard of Crawford Market in Bombay (Mumbai). The advertising is about Marie Brizard & Roger a French cognac and liqueur maker, that sold their products in the city during the British era. The back of the postcard shows a handwritten price of Rs 2 and 10 paisa, per bottle, of the cognac in 1906.
The picture in the postcard is of the iconic Crawford Market and the street in front packed with people and vehicles at the time. Notable are the horse-drawn trams and carts, remember automobiles were just emerging on the roads. In fact, Bombay may have had more automobiles on the road than other British Indian cities at the time. See my post- Colaba And Earliest Motor Car Mumbai – Old Photo 1900. The Crawford Market building was designed by British architect William Emerson and is an excellent example of fine British architecture in Bombay. Emerson had also designed the attractive Kipling Fountain situated in the outer courtyard. Lockwood Kipling father of Rudyard Kipling had designed the decorative panels of the fountain. The 128-foot high clock tower, a mute sentinel, adds charm to the building. Read also- 20 Historical Monuments & Old Buildings in Mumbai
