Crawford Market Mumbai Interior View – Old Photo 1944

This is an old 1944 photo showing the interior view of the Crawford Market in Bombay (Mumbai). Situated slightly north of Victoria Terminus station in South Mumbai is the famous Crawford Market. This magnificent Victorian-era market building is one of the best-known landmarks of Mumbai. Designed by a young British architect William Emerson, the construction was completed in 1869.

The most attractive section of the building is undoubtedly its 128-foot clock tower. J. L. Kipling father of the famous Rudyard Kipling played a part in the construction of the building. William Emerson had also designed the remarkable ornamental fountain in the outdoor courtyard. Kipling senior sculpted its beautiful intricate panels.

Which consists of guardian animals and Indian river goddesses. Above three of the arched openings have sculptural relief also designed by J L Kipling. Inside the main market of this Crawford Market building are two wings. With uniformly arranged stalls selling a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices. Possibly as seen in this small 1944 interior view photo of Crawford Market.  Click on the photo for better view.

Did you know- in 1882, the building was the first in India to be lit by electricity.
