Lady Curzon Hospital, In the British Era, Bangalore, 1900 Postcard
A 1900 postcard of the charming Lady Curzon Hospital in Bangalore (Bengaluru) during the British era. It was better known as the Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospitals, later renamed to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institution in 2020. Located in Cantonment (Shivajinagar), from where the city expanded after the 4th Anglo-Mysore War.
The Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospitals, although were adjoining medical institutions, both operated separately during their early days. The Bowring Civil Hospital, opened in 1867, was for men. The Hospital was the only civil medical institution of Bangalore till 1890. The Lady Curzon Hospital, established in 1890, was for women and children.
The medical institutions were not only hospitals but also taught students pursuing medical degrees. This quintessentially British colonial-era building does not exist anymore, it was probably torn down to make way for a more modern building. The steeple of St Mary’s Church peeks out at the background near the center of the picture.
