Elephant Attacking Lion British India, 1837 Watercolour Painting

An 1837 British India-era beautiful watercolour painting of an elephant attacking a lion. A lion appears to have pounced on a European hunter, and the elephant and its mahout comes to his rescue. On the reverse is another watercolour that of a pensive European Lady.  Although unsigned and untitled the artworks were believed to have been done by the talented Major A.C. Hutchinson.

Not much is known of Hutchinson except that he was with the Bengal Artillery which was under East India Company. Painting in the 19th century was not widespread amongst Indians except for some like the great Raja Ravi Varma. An exceptionally gifted painter from Travancore. Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings had created mass hysteria of sort for the lifelike images he had created on the canvas. He is still revered as one of the greatest painters of India.
