St George’s Hospital Or European Hospital Bombay – 2 Postcards 1900
Two 1900 postcards of St George’s Hospital or European General Hospital in Bombay (Mumbai). The hospital was known as St George’s Hospital or European General Hospital. It catered to the many Europeans at the time. It was originally called the European Hospital, later St George’s Hospital. In honor of Sir George Oxenden, the first Governor-General of Bombay.
It is located in the Fort area near Victoria Terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus). The Hospital was built during the term of Gerald Aungier, the second Governor-General (1669-1677). Aungier is usually described as the person who first initiated the development of Bombay. The expansion of Fort George from a small Portuguese is generally credited to him. Today this is a free hospital run by the Government of Maharastra with a capacity of 460 beds. Click on the photo for better view.
