Bangalore Race Course During The British Era, 1924 Postcard

This is a 1924 postcard of the Bangalore Race Course during the British era. It is probably well known by now that the British established Bangalore (Bengaluru) after the 4th Anglo-Mysore War. The city became an important cantonment for the British, and they stationed cavalry units there in the 1800s. With them came a passion for horses and horse racing.

Horse racing was founded by the British cavalry units stationed in the city as a recreational activity. However, the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) associated with horse racing was formed in 1920. The first race course was in Agram, near the vicinity of the HAL airport (shown in the postcard). It was later shifted to Lalbagh in 1928. The BTC moved yet again, this time to its present location at High Grounds in 1951. Today it is one of the most popular horse racing venues in India. Click image to enlarge.

Did you know – that the first racecourse in India was set up in Madras, back in 1777. Other turf clubs in India would follow from there.
