19th Century View of Flora Fountain Bombay, 1890 Photo
An 1890 photo with a spectacular view of the 19th-century view of Flora Fountain in Bombay (Mumbai). Flora Fountain seemed beautiful in its early years. In the photo, the place seemed to look bare except for the Horse-drawn trams, horse and bullock carts, and a sprinkling of people. Shady trees lining the road appear to add appeal to the beautiful scene.
It looks like watering was in progress on the unmetalled road, which was to reduce dust. Metalling of roads was not common at the time, it came into prominence apparently with the advent of the automobile in the 1900s. Flora Fountain lies at the intersection of Esplanade Road (M G Road) and Hornby Road (D N Road). The Dadahbai Naoroji Road leads to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Station (formerly VT).
