The Development of Bombay During The British Era, 1893 Map

An 1893 map shows the development of Bombay (Mumbai) during the British Era. The key locations on the map are Salsette Island, Bandora or BandraTannah or Thane, Kourla or Kurla, Trombay, Mahim, Coulaba or Colaba. Bombay was a cluster of seven islands viz. Bombay Isle, Colaba, Little Colaba, Mahim, Parel, Worli & Mazagaon. Consequently, through 2½ centuries of reclamation united the seven islands into a single landmass.

It was joined by the island of Salsette in the north. This was truly an engineering marvel of its time. The map shows the half-completed reclamation of the Bombay Islands. Interestingly, places like Mulund, Ghatkopar, and other well-known places were either partially submerged, or unpopulated, or did not exist at all. Notice two black railway lines on this map, these were the railway tracks of the B.B & C.I (now Western Railway) and the G.I.P Railways (now Central Railway).
