Flora Fountain & Horse Tram Bombay – 3 Postcards 1900
Postcards from 1900 to 1910 show Flora Fountain with horse and electric trams in Bombay (Mumbai). A brief text from one of the postcards “Hornby Road, Bombay, showing Flora Fountain. Unlike most other shipping towns of importance, it is not situated upon a river. It is one of the clusters of islands. Which artificially connected with other islands and the mainland by causeways and railway viaducts. Forming a peninsular with one of the finest harbours in the world…”
Flora Fountain stands at the intersection of three major streets. At its center is the Roman Goddess Flora mounted on a fountain, crafted out of Portland stone and shipped from England. Installed in 1869 in what was then a spacious open plaza see photos. Flora Fountain is now swamped with a sea of traffic. The first tramway service in Bombay was in 1874, the trams were pulled by horses. By 1907 the electric tram was introduced. The first postcard shows the horse-drawn tram the other two show the electric trams.
