View of Trams & Municipal Corporation Building Bombay, 1890 Photo

municipal corporation building and trams

An 1890 photo with a view of horse-drawn trams and the grand Municipal Corporation Building in Bombay (Mumbai). Now known as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It is a Grade IIA heritage building and is adjacent to the strikingly beautiful Victoria Terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus). The Victoria Terminus, like the BMC, is also a Grade II heritage building, both designed by the famous British architect F W Stevens.

The Municipal Corporation building is located at the crossroads of Mahapalika Marg (Cruikshank Road) and Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Roads (Hornby Road). Soon after the completion of the Victoria Terminus in 1888, F W Stevens ventured on his next big project. Which was this Municipal Corporation Building, the construction of which was completed in 1893. The city’s horse-drawn trams can be seen at the junction in front. A charming sight on the roads of Bombay at one time, it was electrified in 1907. But the tramway system of Bombay was discontinued once and for all in the early 1960s.

To see the interiors of this beautiful structure, go to Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC or MCGM) Headquarters Building, Mumbai.

Did you know – the building houses the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the richest corporation in India.
