A rare 1944 photo of American soldiers WW2 victory parade in New Delhi. A detachment of American soldiers is seen at a victory parade in Delhi at the end of World War 2. Calcutta (Kolkata) had emerged as one of the most important pivotal places for coordinating the movement of troops and logistics. There was an influx of US troops to Calcutta from 1942 onwards.
Thousands of American soldiers arrived in India when the China-Burma-India (CBI) operations began in 1942. They stayed on American and Allied bases in Calcutta (Kolkata), Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland. The Japanese had won victory after victory, extending their empire from Wake Island in the Pacific to Malaya and Singapore in Southeast Asia.
The Japanese were already driving into Burma, capturing the capital, Rangoon. Nevertheless, the Indian, American, and Burmese soldiers put up a brave front and routed the Japanese. Thus defeating the enemy in most parts of Burma by May 1945. After the Allied forces’ victory in the war, the American soldiers enthusiastically gave a victory parade in Delhi, as seen in the photo.
