Marine Lines Apartments In British Era Bombay, 1900 Postcard

A 1900 postcard of the Marine Lines apartment buildings during the British era in Bombay (Mumbai). A military battalion line operated from here during the British era Bombay hence the name Marine Lines. The Marine Lines Apartments were later replaced as airforce residential quarters.

The apartments are located near the Metro Adlabs. Before the Back Bay Reclamation Project, the Marine Lines faced the Back Bay waters. The Queens Road (now Maharishi Karve Road) was the prominent peripheral road facing the back bay. But after the creation of Marine Drive the Queens Road was pushed inwards.

The Parsi Gymkhana and Islam Gymkhana are in the precincts of Marine Lines. It also has a railway train station operated by the Western Railway Line. Formerly trains terminated at Marine Lines although it is now the second stop. It was the third station when the Colaba Station was functioning many decades ago. Click on the image for better view.

Did you know – the famous Wankhede Cricket Stadium also lies in the precincts.
