Churchgate Railway Station Bombay – 4 Postcards 1900
Four postcards from 1900 to 1940 show the Churchgate railway station in Bombay (Mumbai). The Churchgate station was originally built in the Swiss chalet style, see images 1 and 2. Completed in 1870 by the Bombay Baroda & Central India Railway (BB & CI), now the Western Railway. The station underwent several transformations over the years.
The 4th image shows the Swiss chalet style replaced with a concrete station probably in the 1920s. It underwent a renovation for electric trains in 1926. The first shows a local steam suburban train pulling out of the Churchgate station on its way to the Colaba Station. The 3rd image shows the railway gate just after the station and the Rajabai Clock Tower. The Back Bay lay just adjacent to the Churchgate before its reclamation. The BB & CI’s Gothic building (not visible here) lies close by.
