Greenways Road Adyar Madras, 1910 Postcard

Greenways Road Adyar Madras, 1910 Postcard

This is an old 1910 photograph postcard of the Greenways Road in Adyar, Madras, now Chennai. See also my post on another famous road of Chennai- Madras Mowbray’s Road – Old Photo 1902. Both roads are from the British era and are beautifully lined with trees. But the Greenways Road does not have as much history as Mowbray’s Road.

Or I may be wrong although available records on this road are minimal. Greenways was named after a Britisher who owned a large tract of land on this stretch of the road in Adyar. There is a beautiful handwritten message at the back see picture, the writing is in French dated 4 Dec 1912. British Colonialism in India first started in Chennai. After constructing Fort St George in a narrow strip of land at the beach, British colonialism grew from there.

This old 1910 postcard shows a beautiful tree-lined road. On the left side are the paddy fields with a wooded area at a distance. Today more than 100 years later the Adyar cannot be recognized a wee bit because of the vast developments that have taken place.

Did you know- Chennai is also known as the ‘Gateway to South India’.
