Brahmin Family In India, 1861 Print
A rare old engraved print of a Brahmin Family in India dating to 1861. It measures- 8.5 x 5.5 inches. The text is in Gothic German Indier Brahmane. The year “1861” and number “24” are also printed on the page. The image shows what seems to be a north Indian Brahmin Family, probably with their maidservant.
This is an exceptionally beautiful hand-colored antique print of over 150 years old. The Brahmin is of the highest caste in Hinduism. Below them, the caste comprises of Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, and Sudra. Traditionally considered the purest among the castes. So by tradition, they are characteristically priests, philosophers, teachers, and so on.
However this is not a rule, they also work in departments of government and quasi-government organizations. They are traditionally vegetarians and although in modern times some do veer from their vegetarian diet to a non-veg diet. Although many Konkani, Maharashtrian, and Bengali Saraswat Brahmins are pesco-vegetarians.
Which are mostly vegetarians but include fish in their diet but no meat. Previously South Indian Brahmins would stay in agraharams or row of houses on either side with a temple at the center. The agraharams are concentrated mainly in rural places or sometimes on the outskirts of cities. Although this tradition seems to be dying out.
Did you know- Brahmin men tie the sacred thread across their body thus distinguishing them from other castes.
