Crawford Market & Tram In Mumbai- Old Postcard 1914

This is an old 1914 Postcard of Crawford Market & electric Tram in Bombay or Mumbai. See details on the Crawford Market in my earlier post- Antique Photo Crawford Market Bombay. The Crawford Market or Mahatma Phule Market as known now is the busiest market in Bombay.

It features a central hall with three large gateways and a 128 feet clock tower.  Inside the main is a lovely stone fountain, gifted by the philanthropist, Sir Cowasji Jehangir. Here you will also notice an early Bombay or Mumbai electric Tram plying the distance.

Extract from my post- Antique Earliest Print Of Crawford Market Bombay. “Designed by the British architect William Emerson, it is one of the iconic landmarks of Bombay, now Mumbai…”

Did you know- Bombay was electrified in 1882, and that Crawford Market was the first of the commercial building to be lit up by electricity.
