1925 Photo Of Electric Tram At Flora Fountain Bombay
An old 1925 photo capturing an electric tram at Flora Fountain in Bombay (now Mumbai). This rare historical image shows the city’s once-efficient tramway system in action — trams trundling through busy streets as passengers hopped on and off even while moving. The bustling Flora Fountain Street is alive with pedestrians and horse carriages, its tram tracks crisscrossing beneath the grand colonial-era buildings that frame the scene.
Mumbai’s tramway service began in 1874 with horse-drawn trams and was electrified by 1907, extending across much of the city. The electric trams became an iconic part of Bombay’s urban life until increasing traffic congestion led to the system’s closure in 1964. Click photo to enlarge.
Did you know- tram tracks hidden underneath the road for more than six decades have been uncovered in Mumbai’s Flora Fountain area.
