Xmas & New Year Wishes Bombay Presidency WWI,1917 Postcard

A 1917 postcard of Xmas and New Year wishes, presented by the women of the Bombay Presidency in WWI. The images throw light on the British Indian Army in Mesopotamia during WWI. The Times of India Press, Bombay, printed and published the postcard. The right side image shows a front-line trench in the Jebel Hamarin, Mesopotamia. A soldier hoisting the Union Jack Flag is shown in the left image.

Indian troops participated in many war fronts, especially in Europe and North Africa. The fine print near the bottom edge of the postcard reads “Presented by the women of the Bombay Presidency”. Who were primarily the wives of the colonial officers banded together with vicereine Lady Willingdon as the head. Creating the War & Relief Fund for the active Indian and British troops during WWI. Various types of products of diverse varieties were sold to raise funds mainly to sustain the dependent families of the troops.

Did you know- Lord Willingdon husband of Lady Willingdon served as the Governor of Bombay (1913-18), Governor of Madras (1919-24), Governor-General of Canada (1926-31), and then the Viceroy of India (1931-36).
