The Indian Gymkhana Club British Era Bangalore, 1932 Postcard

A 1932 postcard of The Indian Gymkhana Club during the British Era in Bangalore (Bengaluru). The Indian Gymkhana Club was established in Cox Town of Bangalore in 1932. Started by government employees on a 4.25-acre plot of land. The quaint building shown in the postcard does not exist anymore today. It has a completely different look from what it was once.

The city has its fair share of clubs which goes back to the British era days. Unlike other cities in the plains, Bangalore is situated on the Deccan Plateau with a far cooler climate that suited the Europeans well. Understandably there was a large presence of the British military and civil service officials with their families. Thus clubs in the city became the best places to socialize and pass the time for the families.

Did you know- after 1857 Indian rebellion clubs became more significantly important for the British, and entry was restricted mostly to the Europeans only.
