The Indian Gymkhana Club British Era Bangalore, 1932 Postcard
A 1932 postcard of The Indian Gymkhana Club during the British Era in Bangalore (Bengaluru). There seems to be not much information on this club but what little is there is as follows. The Indian Gymkhana Club was established in Bangalore in 1932.
It was founded by government employees on a 4.25-acre plot of land in Cox Town. The old-world building shown in the postcard probably does not exist anymore. However the club is today a vibrant sporting and recreational center, it has a completely different look from the charming quaintness it was at one time.
Bangalore city has its fair share of clubs that goes back to the British era days. Unlike other cities in the plains, Bangalore is situated on the Deccan Plateau with a much cooler climate that suited the Europeans well. Thus quite understandably there was a large presence of British military and civil service officials with their families during colonial times. Clubs became a necessity to interact with others of their ilk, it became the place to socialize and pass time with their families.
