Spectacular View of Victoria Terminus & BMC Bombay, 1880 Photo

This 1880 photo shows a spectacular view of the Victoria Terminus and the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC). For the uninitiated, the grand Victoria Terminus is on the right and the BMC is on the left. The Victoria Terminus (VT) is now the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

The Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Both the heritage buildings stand on the junction of a forked road. One is the  Hornby Road (now Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road, seen in the picture), the other is the Cruikshank Road (now Mahapalika Marg), which veers left by the side of the BMC (not seen).

See the horse-drawn trams packed with passengers and with advertisements of Nestle Milk on their tops. People crowd the junction, and no automobiles are visible since their advent was only by the 1900s. This spectacular view of the Victoria Terminus and BMC junction is unlike what it is today; it is a bit more crowded and congested now. Click on the photo to enlarge.

Did you know – both the imposing BMC and Victoria Terminus were designed by the renowned British architect F W Stevens.
