King George V & Queen Mary At Calcutta – 3 Photos 1912
Three old 1912 photos show the expectant arrival of King George V & Queen Mary in Calcutta (now Kolkata). The first image is that of the Calcutta Government House where King George V and Queen Mary would reside. Also seen are the Indian guards and the silhouette of the Chinese Winged Cannon near the steps.
The second image shows the anticipatory wait of the Indian policemen and guards. Not sure of the exact location but possibly Prinsep Ghat or perhaps the Calcutta Railway Station. There are also welcome arches and the British Union Jack Flags in the photo. The third image shows crowds on both sides of the street seemingly looking forward to a glimpse of the royal couple.
Notice the tram tracks on the ground and the tram’s overhead pantographs. British mounted policemen are also seen, and a long line of Indian guardsmen standing on either side of the road. All evidently awaiting the expectant arrival of King George V and Queen Mary. The royal couple’s prime agenda was to attend the Delhi Durbar which was held in their honor in December 1911. Nevertheless, a tour of the sub-continent was also chaulked out for their visit. Click on the photo for better view.
