Amusing Scene of A Servant British India, 1907 Postcard

back

An old 1907 postcard displays an amusing scene of a drunk servant during the British India era. The servant seems knocked off after taking drinks from his master’s wine. Britons typically lived in quite spacious bungalows with several servants to manage the household.

The bungalows usually were provided with servant’s quarters at the back. So that they would be available at their beck and call. The British family usually entertained with dinner or parties for friends or colleagues. This was to while away the time generally because there were no other suitable entertainments back then.

The man probably a head servant seems to have not wasted time in snucking a quick drink from his boss’ wine bottle. This amusing scene of the British India era was not a common sight. Perhaps it may have been enacted to spice up the postcards with humour to increase sales. Since picture postcards were the best form of grabbing eyeballs at the time. Click on the image to enlarge.
