Wellington Lines Bombay – Old Postcard 1916

This is an old 1916 postcard of the Wellington Lines, Bombay, now Mumbai. The post office cancellation dates to 4 Nov 16, but the postcard probably is from a much earlier period.  And is captioned  “Dathooboy Mansions To Pabaney House, Wellington Lines, Bombay.”

Many of the buildings erected for residential purposes in used the flat or apartment system of housing. They tailored it to the cosmopolitan middle class and upper classes of the city’s population. Built on a style that was vaguely a combination of the international style of the Art Deco from America.

They built many buildings in Bombay or Mumbai in this style. These included residential buildings, office blocks, and several theatres. Replacing the image of the city from a Victorian to a cosmopolitan, international modern city. Click on the photo for better view.
