Flora Fountain, Esplanade Road & Trams Bombay - 2 Photos 1895

Two old 1895 photos of the Flora Fountain, Esplanade Road & Trams in Bombay (now Mumbai). Also known as Rampart’s Row in the British era. This beautiful view shows the Flora Fountain and the Esplanade Road from the once famous Watson’s Hotel. Two horse-drawn trams are seen travelling to and fro on Esplanade Road, now Mahatma Gandhi Road.

The imposing building in the center at a distance is the Oriental Building. The Esplanade Road forks out at the Flora Fountain juncture. One continues as the Mahatma Gandhi Road, the other as Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Road (formerly Hornby Road). The Dadabhai Naoroji Road leads towards the Victoria Terminus.

The area is studded with colonial-era heritage buildings that are seen on either side. At the distant back are the obscure outlines of the Bombay Secretariat’s and high court towers. The place developed into a Europeanized city through the efforts of Bartle Frere. Who was then the British Governor (from 1862 to 1867).

Did you know – today, Rampart’s Row is preserved as a historical area, and many of the heritage buildings are remodeled into art galleries, boutiques, cafes, and cultural spaces.
