An 1890 photo of the great Taj Mahal from across the River Yamuna. The greatest Mughal monument ever created. A gem that never disappoints living up to the epithet “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. The Taj Mahal was built by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz. Who, by her beauty, her grace, her intellectual ability, and her winning ways, had obtained such power over Shah Jahan.
He promised to build the most beautiful mausoleum while she was on her deathbed. Mumtaz died in 1631, and immediately the bereaved Mughul Emperor Shah Jahan set about to fulfill his promise of building the most beautiful monument the “Taj Mahal”. Completed in 1653, today it is a UNESCO heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the modern world. This old photograph of the Taj Mahal seen from the riverside was taken in 1865. It shows a pristine river unlike what you see today.

Did you know- it took 22 long years to build the Taj Mahal (1632-1653). Although not fully completed because of finishing work, it continued even after that.
