A good book on Bombay, now Mumbai that gives a piece of history of the city of gold. The book covers the city even before it was handed over to the British by the Portuguese to the present times. After the marriage of Catherine of Braganza to King Charles II of England, the King received the seven islands of Bombay from the Portuguese as a part of a huge dowry.
King Charles handed over Bombay to East India Company for a nominal lease amount. It took several decades for the East India Company or the Company for short to decide on its future. Since East India Company governed the places they occupied in India in the 17th century. They were based in Surat later making Bombay their base.
