Views of Steam Train To Ooty In The Nilgiris – 3 Old Postcards 1909

There are three old postcard views of the steam train To Ooty in the Nilgiris. Two of the postcards are from around 1905 and one is from 1980. To see the original photo of one of the postcards go to Ooty Steam Loco Train Halt Over Bridge – Old Photo 1909. Excerpts from the post – “This is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway’s (NMR) Train and locomotive. The train is probably on a test run since it looks empty except for a few Britishers and Indians on it.

All seem to be striking a pose for the camera. A fisherman in the river can be seen on his coracle. Because of the steep mountainous gradient, the steam locomotive works on the rack and pinion system. Which is still in operation even today and runs from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. At Coonoor, the steam locomotive is replaced with a diesel one and continues on the last leg of its journey to Ooty. The same is repeated typically on its return journey too….”

Did you know- the rack and pinion track system is used only on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in India. The distance covered is 46 km long.
