Ooty Steam Loco Train Halt Over Bridge – Old Photo 1909
This is an old 1909 photo of the train’s halt over the Mettupalayam bridge. It is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway’s (NMR) pulled by a steam locomotive. The train has halted over the bridge presumably it was on a test run. The photograph shows some Britishers and Indians and some of them are seen near the water. Also visible is a man fishing from inside a coracle.
Because of the steep mountainous gradient, the locomotive runs on the rack and pinion system. And it is still in operation even today from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. At Coonoor the steam engine is the replaced with a diesel engine and continues its last leg of the journey to Ooty. Read more Nilgiris – Mountain Railway On a heritage track.
