Vintage Postcard Ooty Steam Loco Train Halt 1909

This old postcard shows an Ooty Mountain Railway Train’s halt over a bridge. A print of an original antique photo which is also in my collection, see my post- Antique Photo Ooty Steam Loco Train Halt Over Bridge 1909. Extract- “This is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway’s (NMR) Train and locomotive. In the photo, it looks empty except for some Britishers and Indians in it.

All seem to be striking a pose for the photographer. Perhaps it is on a test run. Shown is also a man fishing from a coracle. Because of the steep mountainous gradient, the steam locomotive works on the rack and pinion system. Which is still in operation even today and runs from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. At Coonoor, they replace the engine with a diesel locomotive to continue on its last

leg of its journey to Ooty. The same is on the return journey….” There are two more postcards displayed in this post. Read more- Nilgiri Mountain Railway | Everything You Need to Know | Nilgiri Toy Train., See also my post- Rare Nilgiri Mountain Railway Steam Locomotive Drawing

Did you know- NMR has India’s only meter gauge rack and pinion track. The distance is 46 km long.
