Rare View of Ernakulam High Court Boat Jetty, 1930 Photo

This rare 1930 photograph of the High Court Boat Jetty in Ernakulam offers a glimpse into Kochi’s waterfront heritage. Interestingly, the jetty became popularly known as the High Court Boat Jetty only after the establishment of the Kerala High Court in Ernakulam.

The High Court was opened the same year following the formation of Kerala State through the merger of Travancore, Cochin State, and Malabar in 1956. The image shows a Greek-style arch, which was later removed during the reclamation and development of Marine Drive and its promenade in the 1970s–80s.

Despite these changes, the High Court Boat Jetty remains active even today, providing vital ferry connections to Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island, Vypin, and surrounding areas. The former Kerala High Court building is the historic Ram Mohan Palace in Kochi, which served as the High Court’s home for 50 years before the court moved to its present location in 2006. A section of the palace’s walled compound can still be seen in this historic photograph. Did you know – that adjacent to the High Court was the Ernakulam Old Railway Station, also known as the Goods Station, which was the main station of the city until 1960. It lost its prominence once the Ernakulam Junction Railway came into existence.
