Boat Jetty & Backwaters Ernakulam/Cochin, 1950 Postcard
A 1950 postcard of the Boat Jetty and backwaters at Ernakulam / Cochin (Kochi). The city had a rich past with a multicultural center since ancient times. The Jews, Syrians, Chinese, Dutch, British, and Portuguese maritime traders were frequent visitors to the Kingdom of Cochin. Kerala state was formed after the union of Cochin, Travancore, and Malabar in the 1950s.

Crisscrossed with a network of rivers, canals, and backwaters. Travel by boat is sometimes inevitable since the route is shorter and reaches faster than the overland motor vehicle route. The many jetties in Ernakulam are interconnected by passenger boat service under the Kerala State Road Transport or KSRTC for short. This photograph shows the reclaimed area of the main boat jetty in Kochi (the building is not visible in this photo).
