Panoramic View of A Beautiful 19th Century Calcutta, 1880 Photo
An 1880 photo with a panoramic view of a beautiful 19th-century Calcutta (Kolkata). The view is probably from the Calcutta High Court or the Ochterlony Monument. The Esplanade ground is pegged with military tents, and the domed Government House can be seen on the left. Faintly recognizable at the far distance is the outline of the steeple of St Paul’s Cathedral.
The River Hooghly and Fort William are in the foreground (not visible). The image also depicts other prominent buildings that appear to be the GPO, Writer’s building, etc. The British East India Company established Fort William on the shores of the famous River Hooghly in 1696. Calcutta became the capital city of British India until 1911. King George had announced the shift of capital from Calcutta to Delhi during the Delhi Durbar of 1911.
Did you know – the first factory of the British was established in Surat in 1620 and later in Agra, and agents were further sent from these places to the eastern provinces to examine the possibility of opening factories there.
