Gateway Of India When A King Passed Through, 1942 Photo
A 1942 photo of the majestic Gateway of India when a King passed through the place in Bombay (Mumbai). King George V and Queen Mary passed through Apollo Bunder in 1911 before the building of the Gateway of India. The royal couple were on their way to the Delhi Durbar of 1911.
They were feted in Bombay for some days before they left for Delhi. It was same the case before they departed to England, they were given a warm send-off in the city. The Gateway of India was built in tribute to this visit of the British monarch and his wife.
George V and Mary where the first ruling King and Queen to visit India in the time of the British Raj. The Gateway of India monument lies on the Apollo Bunder which was a landing harbour till the 1920s. Boats would ferry passengers arriving in steamer ships to the pier. Facing it was the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Royal Bombay Yacht Club. The Bombay Docks is on the adjacent side.
Did you know – that the last horde of British troops left India through this gateway after India’s independence.
