Old Postcard – Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train 1900
This is an old postcard of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s (DHR) toy train of 1900. The DHR is perhaps the most extraordinary and toy-like railway in the world. The rails are only two feet apart the train covers a distance of 82 km to its destination from Siliguri. See my previous post- Old Photo – Darjeeling Himalayan Railway 1890.
Extract- “To Franklin Prestage, the then agent of the Eastern Bengal Railway Company goes the credit for preparing the scheme and for completing the construction in 1880. The line consists of 82 km of a two feet wide track. Zig-zagging over deep ravines, taking sharp curves and rising over steep inclines.
It reaches a height of 7,000 feet in 65 km. The need for tunnels was circumvented by means of ‘loops’ and ‘reverses’. The engine originally employed was very small even for a two-foot track and was only capable of pulling 7 tons. Later replaced by a standard type pulling a load of 32 tons…”
This postcard of the Darjeeling Railway’s toy train of 1900 shows a British official in front of the steam locomotive with other people around.
Did you know- Sukhna is located in the “Chicken’s Neck” the narrow corridor connecting the North East region with the rest of India.
