An interesting jewellery advertisement on the reverse of this postcard

Seven postcard views of Malabar Hill, Chowpatty, and Marine Drive in British Era Bombay (now Mumbai). The postcards range from 1900 to 1920. Some of them give interesting glimpses of Chowpatty, Marine Drive, and its Promenade before they were even developed. Two of the pictures show a heavily wooded Malabar Hill that is not seen today.

With a scattering of houses on the top of the hill and some art deco type apartments at the base. Due to continual modernization, the different pictures show progressive developments over the course of the years. The shores of the Back Bay include the well-known Chowpatty Beach and other landmarks.

Such as the Art Deco homes seen on the curve of the Marine Drive in some of the pictures. And the famous Marine Drive and Promenade that would appear later. Governor Frere had transformed Bombay from a newly formed island of a single landmass to a European-like city. Noteworthy is a jewellery advertisement seen on one of the postcards.

Did you know – another of Frere’s Governorship was the gas lighting of the streets of the city of Bombay.
