The Grand Inauguration Day of Delhi, The New Capital, 1931 Photo
A rare 1931 news photo captures the grand inauguration of New Delhi, marking the official opening of India’s new imperial capital under British rule. The photograph, titled “The New Seat of British Rule in India,” shows the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, about to enter his coach after unveiling the four Dominion Columns, two of which are visible in the image. In the background stand the majestic Imperial Secretariat Buildings, part of the newly constructed government complex designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker.
This historic event in February 1931 was widely covered in international newspapers, celebrating the birth of New Delhi as the new administrative heart of British India. The inauguration featured a grand parade of troops, both cavalry and infantry, meticulously turned out for the occasion. Lord and Lady Irwin presided over the ceremony, which symbolized the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
The two-week-long celebrations showcased the imperial pomp and pageantry of the British Raj. Lavish receptions, military displays, and cultural events marked the event, reflecting both political symbolism and architectural magnificence. Did you know- there were four Dominion Columns, presented by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. These still exist in front of the main gates of the Secretariat Buildings (North and South Blocks).
