Panoramic View of Viceroy's House Delhi British India, 1930 Photo

A 1930 panoramic view of the Viceroy’s House in Delhi during the British India era. Shown on the right is the changing of the guards by the Scottish Regiment. King George V announced the shifting of British India’s capital from Calcutta to Delhi in the Imperial Durbar of 1911. Preliminary work in assigning architects for the design of the new capital took off immediately.

By 1913 the Government of India entrusted the massive design work to two chief architects Edwin Lutyens and Henry Baker. The design and layout of the new capital included the Viceroy’s House, Secretariat, Parliament, and so on. The Viceroy’s House (colonial era) or the Government House (1947-50) became the Rashtrapati Bhavan post 1950. The Rashtrapati Bhavan was first built for the supreme head- the Viceroy of British India. Today it is occupied by the President of India. Click on the photo for better view.
