Hotel D’angelis View of Restaurant & Balcony Madras, 1912 Postcard

A 1912 postcard of the Hotel D’Angelis with a panoramic view of the restaurant and balcony in Madras (Chennai). The view down is that of the Parisian Garden Restaurant’s courtyard. The photo was taken from the beautiful balcony. At the end of the balcony is a faint view of a European lady and servants. Giacomo D’Angelis, an Italian started the restaurant in the European quarter of Mount Road in Madras (now Chennai).

It was opened in 1908, and by 1919 the hotel was well known to the Europeans. It boasted in an advertisement: clean commodious rooms with European bathrooms attached; a European chef; Electrical conveniences; a beautiful Parisian Garden within the restaurant…etc. They had even opened a branch in Ootacamund or Ooty, under the name “Sylk’s Hotel”.

Did you know – Giacomo D’Angelis was an entrepreneur as well as an adventurer, he not only built the first biplane in India in 1910 but actually flew it near Fort St George.
