View Of Harbour From Apollo Bunder Bombay, 1900 Photo

This is a 1900 photo of the view of harbour from Apollo Bunder in Bombay (Mumbai). Apollo Bunder is where the Gateway of India was constructed in 1924. It was the landing jetty for passengers arriving by steamer ships. However, the Bombay Dockyard expanded to accommodate passenger ships in the later years.
Thus diminishing Apollo Bunder’s use as a harbour. Note the crowd enjoying the view and two European ladies taking a stroll. A number of horse carts seem patiently waiting for potential passengers. Remember motor cars did not come into the scene yet. The future Taj Mahal Hotel would be situated opposite the Apollo Bunder. And adjacent was the Royal Bombay Yacht Club.

Did you know – the conical roofed room on the left is supposedly the tide gauge room.
