Colaba Coast In British Era Bombay, 1890 Photo

An 1890 photo of the Colaba coast in the time of British era Bombay (Mumbai). Steamer ships are seen anchored off the coast, buildings and houses are visible in the distant coastline. Colaba was one of the seven islands before Bombay was unified into a single landmass by reclamation. It is located south of the Fort area, and is one of the most visited places in Bombay.

It had its fair share of colonial history. Colaba once had a busy railway station under the B B & C I Railway only to be discontinued in 1930. The Afghan Church is a popular landmark of Colaba built by the British in memory of the fallen British soldiers during the Afghan War. Tourists today frequently visit for shopping, dining, and so on. The southern part is a Naval defense area today.
