King George V At The 1911 Delhi Durbar, 1920 Photo
Old 1940 news photo of King George V at the Delhi Durbar of 1911. Shown are King George V and Queen Mary and princelings of various Indian princely states. It was a massive event to mark the coronation of King George V as the King-Emperor of India and the empire. And also the occasion of declaring the shifting of the British India capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
A considerable amount of money was spent on so much of the pomp and ceremony. Unequaled in grandeur by any other but perhaps by the Moghul Emperors. The source of the enormous expenses borne would apparently have been from India’s coffers. I will add more photographs and picture postcards of the Delhi Durbars. The Maharajas and Nawabs of every British Indian princely state attended the Durbar.
