Central Hall of Indian Parliament House Delhi, 1925 Print
A 1925 print showing the central hall of the old Indian Parliament House in New Delhi. This is a page from the Academy Architecture publication of 1925, it shows the sketch of the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament House. Drawn by L. H. Bucknell, and the architect was Herbert Baker. Baker was one of the architects who was granted the work for the design of the new capital Delhi. The other architect was Edwin Lutyens. Although both of them had work differences between them so much so that they did not see eye to eye.
One example was the case of the Legislative Building (old Parliament House) both had their own strong opinions. Especially about the location, shape, and size of the building. The New Capital Committee decided in favour of Edwin Lutyens’s plea for the circular colosseum design. The construction began in 1921 and was completed in 1927. The Central Hall of the Indian Parliament initially housed the joint library. But later it was converted for joint sessions of the two houses and for hosting international functions.
Did you know – Lutyens and Baker although good friends for long. But in the course of carrying forward the project, both had strong differences and did not speak to each other even until their death. Edwin Lutyens died in 1944 of cancer, two years later Herbert Baker died in 1946.
