British India Viceroy At Alwar Maharaja’s Palace, 1906 Photo
A 1906 photo of the British Indian Viceroy Lord Minto at Alwar Maharaja’s Palace. The Viceroy paid a visit to the Alwar Palace in an open horse carriage. A part of the beautiful palace can be seen on the left. Jai Singh was presumably the ruling maharaja at the time. Jai Singh Prabhakar ruled from 1892 to 1937. With an extravagant lifestyle, spending treasury money on hunting and buying luxurious cars.
One infamous incident of his was that he converted seven Roll Royces, into garbage collection vehicles. Because he was slighted by a Rolls Royce dealer. He died childless and was succeeded by his distant cousin Maharaja Tej Singh Prabhakar who ruled till 1947. Lord Minto the then India’s Viceroy had succeeded the dynamic Lord Curzon in 1905. Lord Hardinge became the next Viceroy in 1910. He was responsible for the Delhi Durbar of 1911 where King George V and Queen Mary attended.
