Aerial Views Of The Gateway Of India In Bombay, 2 Photos 1930

Two rare aerial photographs from 1930 showcase the iconic Gateway of India in Bombay (Mumbai). The first image captures a stunning seaside aerial view, highlighting the monument’s architectural grandeur, while the second presents a unique shoreside perspective. The open space in front of the Gateway served as a parade ground, offering a glimpse into Bombay’s colonial-era history.

During the British era, the vast parade ground in front of the Gateway of India hosted grand ceremonial parades. British Viceroys and even royalty, including King George V and Edward, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward) during his 1875 visit, were officially welcomed or given formal send-offs here. This historic site also witnessed the departure of the last British Battalion from India in 1948, marking the end of an era in colonial history.

Visible on the right are several iconic landmarks of colonial Bombay, including the Royal Bombay Yacht Club, the Bombay Docks, and Cotton Green. On the left (though not pictured) would stand the legendary Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The shoreside aerial view highlights the Yacht Club’s residential annexe, the prominent building in the left row, while the corner dome of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel can be seen partially on the right, adding to the historic charm of the scene.

Did you know – Apollo Bunder, where the Gateway stands, was reclaimed from the sea.
