Rashtrapati Bhavan & Parliament New Delhi, 1933 Photo
This is a 1933 photograph of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament buildings in New Delhi. Formerly called the Viceroy’s House and renamed briefly as Government House after independence. Also shown are the North and South blocks. In 1911 Delhi displaced Calcutta to become the new capital of India. King George V laid the foundation stone for the new capital after the Great Durbar of 1911.
The British Indian government granted the planning of the city to Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. Both were British Architects of good experience. One of their joint work was on the Viceroy’s residence as shown in this photograph. It took 17 years to complete the building and with its 320 acres layout, it was finally finished in 1929. One of the memorable assets of the magnificent Rashtrapati building is its 15 acres of Mughal Gardens.
