Farewell Parade At The Gateway of India Mumbai, 1931 Photo
Old 1931 photo of the farewell parade at the Gateway of India at Bombay, now Mumbai. The scene at the famous Gateway of India. India’s farewell to Lord and Lady Irwin. British India was then replaced with a new Viceroy Lord Willingdon. The post of the Viceroy would routinely complete tenure every five years. Then posted to another country under the British Empire if not retired. Shown is an impressive ceremonial send-off with a parade by the British Indian military.
The young Gateway of India stands majestically in the background in this 1931 news photo. The monument was built just seven years before this function in 1931. Since air travel did not advance fully at that time thus traveling by ship was still the norm. Passengers would alight at Apollo Bunder also called Wellington Pier where the monument stands. Mumbai was the only entry and exit point for steamer ships from the western coast of India at the time. The monument commemorated the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911.
