Panoramic View of Esplanade & Chowringhee Road Calcutta, 1890 Photo

A rare 1890 panoramic photograph of British-era Calcutta (now Kolkata). Captures a stunning view of Esplanade and Chowringhee Road, two of the city’s most iconic landmarks of the colonial period. In the foreground runs the busy Chowringhee Road, with horse-drawn trams moving in opposite directions and horse carriages dotting the street. Reflecting the vibrant urban life of 19th-century Calcutta.

On the left, the Esplanade (Maidan) can be seen along with the historic Ochterlony Monument (now Shaheed Minar) and the Manohar Das Tarag pond. Behind the monument rises the grand Government House (Raj Bhavan) with its striking dome. While to the right stands the distinctive dome of the General Post Office (GPO) of Calcutta.

Although not directly visible, nearby landmarks such as Fort William, the Victoria Memorial, and the Calcutta harbour lie close. In the distance, faint outlines of steamer ship masts can be spotted between the Government House and the Ochterlony Monument. Along with the distant spire of St Andrew’s Church (Scottish Church).

This photograph is a remarkable historical record of 19th-century Kolkata architecture, transport, and colonial heritage. Offering a rare glimpse into the city’s glorious past. Click on photo to enlarge.
