Victoria Terminus Railway Station Bombay – 3 Old Photos
There are two old photographs of the Victoria Railway station terminus Bombay or Mumbai in this post. One of them is from 1895 and the other a news photo from 1930. The Victoria Terminus (VT) or Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) was among the best and also one of the earliest railway stations in India. Named after Queen Victoria because it was formally opened on her Jubilee Day in 1887.
Bori Bunder where the station stands was first a mere landing place for country boats. Later a Railway Station named Bombay Terminus or Bori Bunder station opened in 1853. The first railway line in India was inaugurated on 16 April 1853. And ran a distance of 21 miles from the makeshift wooden shed at Bori Bunder, to Thana.

The work on the Terminus commenced in May 1878 and took 10 years to complete. Frederick William Stevens or F W Stevens was entrusted as the architect of the building. Which he justified with a spectacular design of the building. That today it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Mumbai and India. It was also awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
